As long as common-sense care is exercised, casein painting will require little attention. Proper care mostly involves conditions to avoid, and common sense things NOT to do rather than any active maintenance you must perform yourself. FOLLOWING simple guidelines will insure that your painting remains fresh for generations!
Illumination: Please do NOT expose your painting to direct sunlight or unusually bright artificial indoor light! Light is obviously necessary to view art but at the same time can damage some of the materials found in paintings. Particularly the UV portion of the spectrum is the most damaging one. Use of low wattage incandescent light, which has no UV component, is recommended.
Temperature and humidity: Avoid extremes, and fluctuations of temperature and humidity. Ideal are temperatures between 19 to 24°C and relative humidity between 40% and 50% with a fluctuation not greater than 5% in a day.
Pollution: Please display your painting in an environment as free as possible from dirt, dust, cigarette smoke, and fireplace smoke.
Handling: While it may sound obvious, please handle your painting gently with care, and keep it away form sharp objects.
Cleaning: You may use a soft, clean brush to gently remove surface dust and dirt from the surface. Never use any cleansers, detergents, or other chemicals on your painting. Only an expert should do real cleaning!
